Math
The students have been learning how to solve addition and subtraction story problems within 20. They have been using different strategies:
Addition
Counting all
3+3 = ooo+ ooo
Counting on
3+3= 3 + ooo
Using known facts
3+3 = I know that 3 +2 is 5, so 1 more is 6.
Subtraction
Counting back
6-3 = 6 - ooo (5, 4, 3)
Using known facts
6-3 = I know that 3+3 is 6, so 3 less is 3.
The students have also been learning to read story problems and decide whether it is an addition or subtraction problem. Key words in story problems help us determine which one it will be.
Reading
The students have been working on reading various nonfiction and fiction stories to help sequence (put in order) important events. The students have been exploring how to books, writing about favorite recipes, and sequencing the order in which events happen in fictional stories.
Families
The first graders have been busy learning about families and creating family trees. Thank you so much for taking the time to help your child complete the forms sent home. It’s been fun learning about how each family is unique and special.
