The first graders have been exploring fractions. The students learned that ½ means two equal parts and ¼ means four equal parts. The students designed ½ and ¼ rugs using various colors to differentiate equal parts. We also created “fourths pizzas”. Each student wrote about what made each ¼ of the pizza unique. Fractions are everywhere, try to see how many fractions exist in your home!
We are beginning our next unit in math. This unit involves finding different combinations of 10 by playing math games such as Make Ten, Three Towers, Counting in a Cup, and How Many am I Hiding. The students will also be solving story problems. Here is a sample story problem from this unit: I have some crayons. Some crayons are blue. Some crayons are red. I have more red crayons than blue crayons. How many red and blue crayons could I have?
How does my cultural background make me special?
Thank you to all the families who were able to attend our PBL night. The students explored his or her cultural background. They are beginning to have an understanding that cultures vary around the world. The “My Place in the World” books helped the students begin to develop geographic understanding in relation to where he or she lives. Enjoy the products!
